New students and employees will be given their student or employee ID numbers and Key Accounts after their enrollment application, class registration or hiring has been processed. The ID number is a seven-digit number assigned by Wake Tech. The Key Account username or ID is your first initial, middle initial and last name. A number may be at the end if more than one person has the same initials and last name. Students and employees with two last names will include both last names without a hyphen in the ID. The email Address is the combination of your Key Account username and @my.waketech.edu (for students) or @waketech.edu (for employees). All email addresses are created by Wake Tech; you will never have to create one. ITS will email supervisors account information for new employees that supervisors can then share with the employee. The Admissions Office or the Workforce Continuing Education Registrar’s Office will email students with their account information. All new student and employee Key Accounts are set with a temporary password that combines the seven-digit student or employee Wake Tech ID number, the first two letters of the person’s first and last names, with the first letters of each being capitalized, and his or her date of birth in the MMYY format. If you do not have the information, students should contact the Admissions Office or the Workforce Continuing Education Registrar’s Office, and employees should contact the Human Resources Office. Setting up and activating a Key Account consists of two simple steps: Creating a new password Establishing multi-factor authentication Step 1: Password setup Sign in through Microsoft to change the initial password to something only you know . When you reset the password, it must include the following: At least 14 characters long Cannot contain your account name or parts of your full name that exceed two consecutive characters Contains characters from three of the following four categories: English uppercase characters (A-Z) English lowercase characters (a-z) Base 10 digits (0-9) Non-alphabetic characters, such as @ # % : - ! & { } ~ " ` ’ + = [ ] * $ Once you change your initial password, you cannot change it again for 24 hours, and will be valid for 365 days. MFA requires a second way to verify your identity to log in to Wake Tech networks and change passwords. The methods could be through an authenticator app or by a phone call or text message to a preset number. All Key Accounts require two MFA methods to be set up, and the methods are verified every 180 days. Setting up, using and managing multi-factor authentication Resetting a password If you later forget your password and need to reset it, go to Microsoft and reset it through MFA.
